Pet rabbits can be kept in cages in the home, with some freedom to run free in the house (after thoroughly rabbit-proofing, of course). Rabbits take fairly well to litter training so we rabbit loving people will let our bunnies run free in the home for at least part of the day. Even if the rabbit is thoroughly toilet trained and the house is thoroughly rabbit proofed, a cage will act as a nest, where the rabbit can retreat to rest.

As usual, bigger is better! The Rabbit spends most of her time in a cage. I’ve learned, as a general rule, the cage should be at least four times the size of the rabbit. A guide is 24″ by 36″ for smaller rabbits (less than 8 pounds), or 30″ by 36″ for larger rabbits. A two story condo with a ramp joining the levels seems popular with rabbits too. The boy got the Rabbit her bunny condo for Christmas. She no longer lives in a cage, and we are not allowed to refer to the condo as a cage; and I will tell you why.

The boy got her condo paradise from Petwerks. She didn’t take to the ramp right away. Since I was excited and determine she use the ramp, I kept pushing her ass down the ramp from the second floor to the first. ”Don’t try this at home.” But, before long, she was hopping up and down the ramp. As she reaches the top floor, she bounces her button tail around, looks up to find you, with a look on her face of “Tah, dah.” She use to come out of her cage frequently but now she barely leaves her condo. As a rabbit owner, I’m excited to know while I’m at work, she is having a good time in her play paradise. She’s probably rearranging her condo as you read this. She must get bored frequently with her layout, constantly moving things around. It makes you wonder if she stands back and takes a good hard look, as if to say, “nah, I don’t like my bowl here, how about there.”

The upstairs is her boudoir where she has her stuffed animals consisting of two bunnies and an elephant. Yes, elephant. That was her first stuffy – I couldn’t find any bunnies so I bought the elephant. Don’t be prejudice. The second floor has carpet where as the first floor is lined with plastic flooring. The first floor is where you can find her toys, food bowls and water with her litter box in the corner. Though it is four times bigger than her cage, it is easier to clean. I have a mini Shop-Vac I use to instantly clean out any droppings, and her litter box comes right out. The litter box has a wire rack over it so her droppings do not get in her fur. The condo is definitely more sanitary and easier to manage. Plus, it’s on wheels (very cool). Because the door has a high step (almost taller than her), I put a pillow down for the princess. She hops out onto the pillow while looking at you she thinks, “I’ve arrived.”

The size of the condo is unreal. I can get my entire upper body through the doors. How does it fit in my one bedroom shoe box, you ask? Well, after a divorce, going from a five-bedroom, four-floor home, I have lots of furniture and belongings which are crammed into a very tight space. So, adding this condo is quite ridiculous. Nonetheless, I wanted something grand for the Rabbit. After all, she deserves it. Not to mention, I want to adopt a buddy for her. The condo is four feet tall and sticks out about a foot – Now the Rabbit has more cubic feet per ratio, than I do. I think I’m moving-in.
