The Valley swim club was accused of discriminating against minority children over the summer. Some black and Hispanic children said white club members made racist comments. The President, John Duesler said, “the youngsters had changed the atmosphere and complexion of the club.” and revoked their membership. Later Duesler said that it was a “poor choice of words.” and said it was more about “security and safety of the children.” Then why not revoke the white folks privileges? Why not instill a Will Not Tolerate Policy? Why not address those ‘white’ complaints with the Will Not Tolerate Policy? Oh, that’s right, they tolerate racism.

Perhaps if Jackass Duesler ran his business with graciousness, instead of ignorance, he might still be in business.

I remember my father telling me stories about his good ‘ole days and wishing he could connect again with his lost friends. Which reminds me how people grow-up, get married, move away, have kids, carrying our friendships away like a leaf in the wind until one day you find yourself alone thinking.

Not only do we lose past friends, we find it hard to stay connected with new acquaintances. Sure you can exchange phone numbers but how often do you call someone you’ve just met? This past month, I vacationed in Vegas where I met a new friend and now we are connected in Facebook, and I believe we communicate more than had we just exchanged digits.

Since joining fbook, I’ve connected to old and new friends. Though, I may not physically see them, I’m now apart of their day-in, day-out antics which is more than before. Sure some of it’s ridiculous and too much information but it makes me smile nonetheless. For example, I now know that one of my friends “is enjoying a VERY lazy Sunday – read, nap, read, nap…,” or another writes, “wants to go out for a big fattening brunch, but is reading a fad diet book instead,” or another, “is having pivotal parental moments left & right today…”

I now see pictures of friends’ vacations, family, and daily life that I might not have before. Some friends post events, “is going skydiving!,” or “off to yoga,” or “headed to Hofbräuhaus Saturday,” and if I want to get involved, I simply send a message. We even hold good conversations which lead to debates regarding politics, religion and ethics. You can set-up a reunion, large or small. I’ve seen friends get connected after 10, 15, even 40 years.

Social media has made it easier to stay in-touch. I no longer wonder about my dear old friend, and I can build on new friendships. Sure, I’m sitting at my computer physically alone but mentally, I’m surrounded by friends which is more than the old man sitting in his chair wishing to communicate.

As we all know, men have been making the statement, “Women change after we commit.” I’ve heard men complain from “My woman gained weight since we met,” or “She stopped wearing makeup,” or “She doesn’t put out anymore.” This has been a discussion for years from office talk to articles and books to reality shows. I want to put up for discussion possible reasons for those accusations.

1. “My woman use to weigh 110 when we met and now she’s fat!”
According to Wise Geek the average age of marriage is 25.9. We all agree that we look pretty darn sexy at that age. For the most part, we are young, more fit, and life experiences are not yet traumatic (bills, kids, deaths, dept, divorce etc.) – and, I repeat, “For the most part.” The hot woman at 26 has only herself to look after.

According to a survey from Weight Loss Resources 37% of women gain weight from boredom or stress. Hmm, well men, it might be because you can’t do for yourself and she must do it for you. Or, your simply not exciting enough for her. And, according to WLR 34% of women are fat because of pregnancy.

2. “Honey, why don’t you dress-up anymore?”
In my humble opinion…

As a woman, when I come home from work or even a day outing, I like, correction, I LOVE to put on my lounge pants, take off the bra, slap on a t-shirt, brush out my hair, take off my makeup and vege out on the couch just like Al Bundy. I’m in MY home wanting to relax and no longer putting on airs. Once you move-in together of course you are going to see this more often. Hell, you’re going to see the face masks, and the bikini waxing, and as Seinfeld put it, “Ugly naked.” But men, you should not fret – all this is for you (said with sweetness).

3. “God woman! It’s been two weeks.”
While you are dating, you don’t see each other as often. Agreed? Of course it ‘seemed’ you were having sex all the time and that you couldn’t keep your hands off one another. In addition, the relationship is just taking off; it’s exciting. You move-in and the excitement wears and NOW she’s bored…Remember men, this is where she’ll gain weight because She’s just not that into you. Don’t get me wrong, we love our men but don’t you think you’ve changed as well? I’ve been in a few long-term relationships, including marriage, and one thing I’ve learned is we all change.

Women can and have said the same things about their man…
“He has a beer gut!” “He use to wear cologne.” “He doesn’t seduce me anymore.” It’s a two-way street. If you are unhappy with something in your relationship, it’s up to YOU to speak up and compromise. I’m not saying change the person but find a way to make it work. If you can’t talk to your partner on exactly how you feel, what is the point in having a relationship?

It’s simple! If you want her/him to get into shape, then exercise together. If you want her/him to dress-up more, go out on a date. If you want her/him to put out, then be seductive.

If there is not balance in a relationship, it will sink.

What would you do if you heard someone insulting another based on race? On NBC’s Dateline What would you do? They hired actors and staged a discrimination scene. The setting was an open house with a realtor (actor) telling a Muslim couple (actors), they “weren’t a good fit for the neighborhood” based on their race. Dateline wanted to investigate, if anyone would step-in and stand up for the minority couple. Though many people were appalled, only a few told the realtor, “This is unacceptable behavior!” To be honesty, I know I would be appalled but I’m not sure I would confront the person directly; probably tell someone else about it, or write about it on my blog. Watching it, it really pissed me off, and I was immensely proud of those people who spoke up. If I’m ever in that situation, I hope I have the COURAGE to say something.

In the US, racism is a well-known issue. From racial profiling to other issues such as affirmative action, police brutality against minorities and the history of slavery and the rising resentment against immigrants. Since the horrific terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, Security concerns have increased, but so too has racial profiling, discrimination etc. Some Americans STILL are against those who resemble Muslims, especially with beards, turbans, hijabs, thoubs and their prayer cloths. Hell! Our own officials at American airports pay closer attention, and at times stop those who resemble Muslims for no other reason. All that tells me is we are judge by the color of our skin.

About a year ago, the nephew was walking home from a football game. He and his friends decided to take a darken path through the woods – a shortcut to their after football hangout, Kings Restaurant. Several boys and a girl, jumped out at them. The nephew’s friends took off, and sadly, the nephew was attacked and beaten black and blue. Now, I told you this story with no race given. Even without knowing the color of someone’s skin, the story is STILL appalling. So why is it, we add color? When I heard the story, my family painted wholeheartedly the picture full of color. What happened was completely outrageous. However, it had nothing to do with race; so why is it mentioned? I later find out some of those kids have troubled homes, poor education, and I’m sure, many other turmoil’s – it was more about wrong place, wrong time – that’s ALL.

Recently, we elected Barack Obama as our Commander and Chief. According to many, he is an African American. OK, isn’t he what we call “white” also? In fact, he refers to himself as a “mutt.” So, why is it we only see him as an African American? Why can’t we ‘just’ see him as Barack Obama, American President? Um, could it be the color of his skin?

What would you do?
