"Ah, wait! I forgot my permit."

Remember when you were 16 how excited you were about driving for the first time? The feeling of one step

closer to freedom! Remember how impatient you were? Remember how anxious you were? How happy? How frightened? Today, the nervous Nephew got his driver’s permit. First, as the loving Aunt and adult, I can’t believe he is 16, and DRIVING. It was yesterday (can’t believe I just said, “It was yesterday”)… Anyway, it was the other day when he was wearing a squishy diaper driving around in his Flintstones, plastic box car while climbing out the windows instead of using the door, all-the-while saying, “Vrooommm, vrooommm.” Today, I took him on his first real vroom ride on the public streets. Both our hearts were racing but I couldn’t tell him until afterward. He wasn’t climbing out the windows nor did he say vrooommm, instead he had a ‘cool’ air about him; sitting back chillin with a few heavy sighs of nervousness. “STOP! WAIT! I need to go back, I forgot my permit.”

The other 15 year old Nephew came along for the ride of a lifetime. He’s smiling in the picture below but he admits later, “I was scared shitless.”

As we drove, I’d say, “Speed limits 45, I want you to go 40.” After all, it was my car. He did drive very well all considering he was nervous. He received a text message from my sister, who texted, “You go boy.” Ok, I’ll admit,

"Look mom, one hand."

I thought nothing of it because I do it all the time. Though, the adult in me kicked, saying, “You can’t text and drive, it’s illegal.” Luckily, at that point, we were parked.

Soon as we were headed home, the tension had faded. It took me back to when I was learning how to drive. My BFF and I would sit behind the wheel of my sister’s car while parked in the driveway, making big plans of all the places we were headed as soon as we got our license. It’s funny because now I can’t stand to drive.

As we arrived home, the Nephew’s friend pulled up. He also has his permit, and his mom let him drive when dropping him off. OMG! There are two 16 year old new drivers on the road -

"I want an Audi R8"

Watch out! The boys are off to a party tonight. I can only imagine what the conversation will be. “Man, I can’t believe I did it!” and more of the same. Tonight will be a memorable night for him so I thought I would blog about this moment for my Nephew, and wish him well on his new endeavor.
